About The Press Freedom Report
The Press Freedom Report is your go-to source for nonpartisan news coverage of media freedom and politics that can’t be found anywhere else.
Press freedom is under threat more than ever — in the United States and around the world. From arrests and killings to lawfare and transnational repression, journalism is facing a multi-pronged assault from powerful actors who would much rather reporters were silent, according to rights groups.
Press freedom is a way to examine U.S. and international politics. And it’s not just the health of democracy that rights groups warn is at stake. Threats to press freedom also have a tangible impact on the lives of individual people. Communities worldwide depend on access to independent information to make informed decisions every day. When journalists are targeted, the public also suffers.
The Press Freedom Report features my original, balanced reporting on media freedom, exclusive interviews with journalists and experts, and the top headlines on media freedom stories to follow from the United States and around the world. A one-stop digest, it’s delivered to your inbox twice per week.

About Liam Scott
I’m an award-winning journalist who has covered the intersection of media and democracy for several years, including as a staff reporter at Voice of America. I’m one of a handful of journalists in the world focused on these issues at a time when they’re increasingly important.
I launched The Press Freedom Report about one month after I was sidelined from reporting at Voice of America, where I had covered press freedom since 2021. These issues are too important for me to sit back and not report on them.
My reporting has taken me from rural America to Berlin and Prague. My work has been recognized with multiple honors, including an award from the National Press Club for my coverage of a police raid on a Kansas newspaper. I was also named a Livingston Award Finalist in International Reporting for a series on transnational repression facing exiled Russian and Chinese journalists.
My work has also been published in outlets including The Washington Post, the Columbia Journalism Review, Foreign Policy, Poynter, The Contrarian, The Diplomat, New Lines, Coda Story, The Daily Beast and DCist. Based in Washington, I received my bachelor’s degree from Georgetown, and I speak French and Mandarin.
